Next Test

16 Apr

New York managed to save face and win an afternoon matinée in Colorado yesterday.

Tonight, the Mets visit St. Louis, hoping to win a series for the first time this year.

It will not be easy  this weekend, as New York will face Chris Carpenter, Jaime Garcia and Adam Wainwright who is 2-0.

The Mets will counter with Oliver Perez, Johan Santana and John Maine. Even with Santana giving the Mets a pitching edge, there has to be a level of doubt after his loss last Sunday.

What you hope for is the Mets to manufacture runs and to take advantage of runners on base. Facing strong pitching will challenge this team as it has to be the greatest pitching test they have faced this season thus far.

The Mets (3-6) could really use a series win. Getting two in St Louis will bring the Mets back to Flushing with an acceptable record of 5-7. While this isn’t ideal, it could be worse. Losing two this weekend will leave the Mets at 4-8. If they lose them all, the team could be 3-9, a hole that will lead to empty seats next week.

With the daily headlines already naming the next manager, the Mets need a strong weekend to gain respect and momentum going into week three of this 2010 baseball season.
